The Senate has passed the Kids Online Safety Act and the Children’s and Teens Online Privacy Protection Act. One requires social media companies to provide better protection for users under the age of 17 and the other requires stronger online privacy for minors. If the bill becomes law, how would social media companies implement these guardrails? Andrew Selepak, social media professor at the University of Florida, says companies would 100 percent have to change their algorithms. Social media companies depend on algorithms for advertising dollars. Mr. Selepak also takes a look at the impact of those changes on revenue.
