A Florida man has been arrested and charged after he was caught pointing lasers directly at incoming aircraft, causing a pilot to experience the blinding rays the device was emitting.

The man had allegedly been engaging in the “hobby” of pointing lasers at aircraft for several months.

This follows reports of a JetBlue pilot, who confirmed on April 25 that he was struck by the blinding laser light as he was approaching Tampa airport in Florida. According to authorities, the pilot could land the plane safely despite the disruption.

A press release by the Tampa Police Department confirmed that Douglas Sollenberger, 47, is alleged to have pointed lasers at dozens of flights since Jan. 1. According to police, the lasers posed a serious threat to pilots and passengers alike.

“Since January 1st, 2024, TPD has investigated over 40 incidents where lasers were pointed at incoming flights, posing a serious danger to pilots and passengers. The investigation narrowed the suspect location to a specific area in South Tampa,” according to the release.

Police were able to pinpoint Mr. Sollenberger’s exact location during the investigation, which led them to the suspect’s home, upon which surveillance was then conducted, which led to a search of the property.

“Tampa Police aviation and patrol officers began an investigation in April, with assistance provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Officers conducted extensive surveillance at the suspect’s residence while gathering evidence,” the press release said.

Two lasers were found inside the home on April 25, one of which is believed to have been used on the Jet Blue flight, police determined.

According to Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw, a possible accident was avoided due to the efforts of the officers.

“These laser strikes are not only illegal but also incredibly reckless behavior that could have resulted in a tragic accident. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of our officers and the FBI in bringing this case to a close,” Chief Bercaw said.

The response by law enforcement was also commended by TPA Executive Vice President of Operations John Tiliacos.

“Tampa International Airport takes every measure to ensure the safety of flight, and we rely on our entire community to assist us in those efforts,” Mr Tiliacos said in the statement.

“We’re thankful to our TPD and FBI partners, whom we work very closely with, for their diligent work in protecting our aircraft, passengers, and crews. Never point a laser at an aircraft!”

Charges against Mr. Sollenberger include misuse of a laser lighting device. Police afterward transported him to the Orient Road Jail.
