House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer has invited President Joe Biden to testify publicly as part of the GOP’s impeachment inquiry. Rep. Comer (R-Ky.) said Americans need to hear from the president himself. He said that way, President Biden can explain why his family received tens of millions of dollars from foreign companies with his assistance. The Committee said it found no legitimate services to merit such payments. In response, House Democrats said evidence involved in the probe had been “comically distorted and twisted,” and suggested the inquiry be put to rest.

On Thursday, the U.S. government awarded the state of Maryland an initial $60 million in emergency funds to clear debris and begin rebuilding the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Rebuilding the bridge will likely cost hundreds of millions of dollars, but President Biden has vowed that the federal government will pay it all. Experts say insurance companies will be on the hook for over a billion dollars and years of litigation.

Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers were back in Georgia on Thursday, arguing in a pretrial motion in the election case. President Trump’s team cited the First Amendment in an effort to have the charges dismissed as prosecutors push to move the case to trial before the November election.
