After a bill was passed last month forcing TikTok to divest or be banned, the social media company responded with a lawsuit, arguing the law violates the First Amendment. NTD spoke to Andrew Selepak, a social media professor at the University of Florida, and asked him for his thoughts on social media’s role in free speech.
“People need to understand that their First Amendment rights are limited on these platforms, as opposed to what is legal for them to say or do,” he said. “With TikTok, we’re not exactly sure what other limitations might be because of the algorithm, … because of the ownership and its connection to the CCP.”
